Great Portwood Street stays shut towards town to 27 November. M60 junction 3 exit slips close overnight on 2, 5, 6 and 7 October; M67 eastbound shut this weekend.
Great Portwood Street is still closed to traffic heading into Stockport, and it stays that way until 27 November. Five bus routes are on diversion.
On the M60, both exit slips at junction 3, the Cheadle junction, close tonight and again on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. The M67 is shut eastbound from Denton all weekend. In Marple, Stockport Road is booked for a closure on Saturday, and Macclesfield Road in Hazel Grove shuts overnight for Network Rail from 13 October.
This page is rechecked against each source before it is updated. Everything below was confirmed today, Friday 2 October, unless we say otherwise.
What is running, and until when
Great Portwood Street: closed towards Stockport until 27 November
TfGM says Great Portwood Street is closed, and it has buses on diversion towards Stockport only, from 7 September to 27 November. The alert was last updated on 18 September (TfGM bus alerts).
The diversions for buses heading into town:
- 322, 325 and 327: via Tiviot Way and Lancashire Hill. The stops at Warren Street by Asda (Stop KK) and outside The Peel Centre are not served.
- 330 and 382: via Newbridge Lane, Millgate and Corporation Street. The two Carrington Road stops, opposite Brinnington Road and near Offerton Street, and the stop outside The Peel Centre are not served.
The council holds a permit for highway repair and maintenance on Great Portwood Street for the same dates, 7 September to 27 November, with a road closure (Greater Manchester road works). The council still has no page for the job. So we cannot tell you what the work is or give a signed diversion for cars. Drivers coming into town from Portwood should expect to be sent round, as the buses are.
The motorways around Stockport
National Highways’ seven-day closure report was last updated at 3.30pm on Thursday 1 October. It covers the nights up to Wednesday 7 October (National Highways).
Cheadle: M60 junction 3 exit slips, four more nights
The drainage scheme between junctions 2 and 4 carries on. Both junction 3 exit slips, clockwise and anticlockwise, close from 9pm to 6am on:
- tonight, Friday 2 October
- Monday 5 October
- Tuesday 6 October
- Wednesday 7 October
Nothing is listed for Saturday or Sunday night. Junction 3 is the A34 Kingsway junction at Cheadle. The motorway stays open, so if you normally leave there for Cheadle, Gatley or East Didsbury you will be carried on to the next junction. The report prints no diversion.
The M67 from Denton: shut eastbound all weekend
The M67 eastbound is closed from where it leaves the M60 at junction 24, Denton, to junction 2. The closure runs from 9pm tonight to 5am on Monday 5 October, and the junction 1 eastbound exit slip is shut with it. That is for permanent barrier work. Denton is in Tameside, about four miles north of Stockport town centre. The report prints no diversion, so if you normally take the M67 towards Hyde and Glossop, plan another way this weekend.
On weeknights the M67 between junctions 3 and 4, at Hyde, closes in both directions from 8pm to 6am tonight and on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with the junction 3 eastbound entry slip and westbound exit slip. That is part of the Hyde to Glossop construction scheme.
The M60 west of Cheadle and the M56
- Sunday night, M60 junctions 5 to 4: the anticlockwise carriageway from Northenden to junction 4 closes from 10pm on Sunday 4 October to 7am on Monday, with the junction 5 anticlockwise entry slip and the junction 4 anticlockwise exit slip. That is for cutting and planting.
- Saturday night, M56 eastbound: the carriageway from junction 3 to the M60 closes from 11pm on Saturday 3 October to 6am on Sunday, with the junction 2 eastbound entry slip. Same reason.
Nothing is listed at junction 1, the Pyramid roundabout, or at junctions 25 and 27 in Bredbury this week.
Council and utility roadworks
Stockport Road, Marple: Saturdays 3 and 10 October
Electricity North West has two road-closure permits on Stockport Road in Marple, both for a new service connection. The first is for Saturday 3 October, the second for Saturday 10 October (Greater Manchester road works, second permit). The permits do not give a diversion or say which length of the road is shut. Neither the council nor TfGM has published anything about it yet.
Macclesfield Road, Hazel Grove: overnight, 13 to 15 October
Network Rail holds a permit to close Macclesfield Road in Hazel Grove from 10pm on Tuesday 13 October to 5am on Thursday 15 October, for “works for rail purposes” (Greater Manchester road works). The permit is plotted near the SK7 6AD postcode. No diversion has been published yet. We will add it when the council or TfGM puts one out.
Carrington Road: one-way eastbound until about 5 October
Carrington Road has been one-way eastbound, towards Bredbury, 24 hours a day since Monday 7 September. The council put this phase at around 4 weeks, which points at early next week. Westbound drivers are diverted by signs from the Stockport Road West, New Zealand Road and New Bridge Lane junction.
The road then reopens both ways under temporary signals for the rest of a scheme the council put at around 7 weeks. The council’s permit runs longer, to 20 November (Greater Manchester road works), and TfGM has the stop opposite Brinnington Road closed until 24 November. The work covers:
- an upgrade of the signal-controlled crossing on Carrington Road
- a new raised table on Werneth Street at its junction with Carrington Road
- bus stop improvements, including moving the eastbound stop
- footway improvements
Working hours are generally 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. Evening resurfacing closures come near the end, and the council says it will publicise them nearer the time (Stockport Council).
The A34: narrow lanes to the A555 until about 9 November
Work started on Monday 17 August on a segregated footway and cycleway beside the northbound A34, between the A555 junction and Stanley Green roundabout. The council expects around 12 weeks, which points at about 9 November. The three lanes stay open under narrowed lanes for most of the works (Stockport Council). Questions go to 0161 474 2299 or a34improvements@stockport.gov.uk.
The United Utilities closure of Stanley Road, Cheadle Hulme, westbound from the A34, was booked to end today.
Resurfacing: the September list is now running into October
The council’s resurfacing page has not changed since 4 September. It still gives mid-September dates for jobs that the permit register books into October. Every job needs a road closure with a signed local diversion during working hours.
| Road | Council page said | Permit now runs |
|---|---|---|
| Dumbarton Close, Reddish | around 17 Sep, about 2 days | to 6 Oct |
| Foliage Crescent, Brinnington | around 17 Sep, about 3 days | to 9 Oct |
| Exeter Road, Brinnington | around 18 Sep, about 3 days | to 8 Oct |
| Chiltern Close, Hazel Grove | around 18 Sep, about 3 days | to 8 Oct |
| Dairyground Road, Bramhall | from 19 Sep, about 5 days | 1 Oct to 9 Oct |
| Burnage Lane, Heaton Mersey | from 21 Sep, about 5 days | ends today, 2 Oct |
| Glendene Avenue, Bramhall | week starting 28 Sep, about 5 days | to 4 Oct |
A permit is the window the work is allowed in, not a promise that the road is shut for all of it. The council’s durations are the better guide to how long each closure lasts (Stockport Council, Greater Manchester road works). TfGM has buses on Burnage Lane diverted via Fog Lane in both directions today. Kays Avenue in Offerton, which was on last week’s list, no longer appears on the register.
The October and November list is unchanged. Nothing on it has a fixed day yet:
| Road | When | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Belmont Way, Heaton Norris (Wellington Road North to Short Street) | October, 7pm to 5am | about 10 nights |
| Councillor Lane, Cheadle (about Meadowbank Primary to Stockport Road) | October, 7pm to 5am | about 7 nights |
| Dale Street, Edgeley (about Robinson Street to Moscow Road) | October, 7.30am to 5pm | about 7 days |
| High Grove Road, Cheadle (Gatley Road to about Kingsway School) | from 26 Oct, 8am to 5pm | about 7 days |
| Dysart Street, Great Moor (Buxton Road to about no 33) | October or November, 8am to 5pm | about 5 days |
| Outwood Road, Heald Green (about Wilmslow Road to Cross Lane) | October or November, 7.30am to 5pm | about 15 days |
| St Petersgate and Market Place (about High Street to the Market Hall) | October or November | not yet given |
Other closures on the permit register
These are on the Greater Manchester road works register with a road closure, but on no council page (Greater Manchester road works):
- Lake Street, Offerton: council highway improvement works, in progress, permit to Sunday 4 October.
- Dean Lane, Hazel Grove: council repair work, Sunday 4 October, 8am to 6pm.
- Ramsdale Road, Bramhall: Cadent gas works, 5 to 19 October.
- Beech Road, Cheadle Hulme: United Utilities repair, Friday 9 October.
- Manchester Road, Heatons: Electricity North West connection, Saturday 10 October, plotted near SK4 5DJ.
- Compstall Road, Romiley: United Utilities repair, booked for Sunday 11 October.
- Brindley Avenue, Marple: Electricity North West connection, 12 to 20 October.
Queens Road, Cheadle Hulme: last week the register carried a year-long council permit with a road closure here, from 28 September 2026 to 1 September 2027. It has gone from the register, and the council has published nothing about it. We take that as no closure for now.
Hollywood Way
- Hollywood Way, Heaton Norris: a one-way closure northbound, between Brinksway and Yew Street, for emergency gas works. TfGM has listed it since 7 August, and now gives an end date of 15 November (TfGM travel alerts).
Council schemes past their own dates
Four council pages give finish dates that have passed. None has been updated since last week. We cannot confirm the work is done, so we are not going to say that it is:
- Castle Hill, Bredbury: road widening and a shared path on Castle Hill and Ashton Road, from the week of 16 March for about 11 weeks. The page was last updated on 12 March. The permit register still shows the works in progress, with a road closure, until 27 November (Stockport Council).
- Brownsville Road, Heaton Moor: the crossing work at the Buckingham Road junction was due to finish by 1 September. The page, last updated 24 August, still describes the road as closed at that junction (Stockport Council).
- Jacksons Lane, Hazel Grove: temporary lights went up in the week of 3 August for about five weeks. Last updated 29 July (Stockport Council).
- Ladybrook Valley, Bramhall: the path between Ramillies Avenue and Bramhall Park Road has been closed since the week of 17 August, for about two months, so to about mid-October. Last updated 10 August (Stockport Council).
Trains
Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 October: Rose Hill and Sheffield
Three late-evening changes (National Rail):
- the 20:21 Piccadilly to Rose Hill Marple leaves 17 minutes later, at 20:38, and runs late throughout
- the 21:48 Piccadilly to Sheffield terminates at New Mills Central, with a replacement bus on to Sheffield calling at all stations except Edale
- the 23:28 Sheffield to Piccadilly does not run, and a bus replaces it
Monday 12 to Thursday 15 October: late Transport for Wales trains
Engineering work closes some lines overnight between Crewe and Manchester Piccadilly. The 22:10 Cardiff Central to Piccadilly terminates at Crewe, with a bus on to Piccadilly. The 22:32 Piccadilly to Shrewsbury starts from Crewe at 23:18, with a connecting bus from Piccadilly (National Rail).
We found no other engineering notice naming Stockport’s stations in the next fortnight (National Rail). Our train times page covers services, fares and parking from Stockport station.
Trams
The Piccadilly Gardens works finish today. What is next (TfGM):
- Sunday 11 October: no trams through Victoria until 10am. A replacement bus runs between Victoria and Piccadilly until 11am.
- Monday 19 October to Sunday 1 November: the big one. No trams at all on the Eccles, Trafford Centre and Altrincham lines. East Didsbury and Manchester Airport services terminate at Firswood. Replacement buses run between key locations, not every stop.
- Monday 2 to Wednesday 4 November: some route changes through the city centre while the new work is tested.
Starling Bike hire rides of up to 20 minutes that start or end at stations near the works are free from 19 October to 1 November, and the £1 unlock fee is waived.
Buses
- Stockport Interchange: Stand S has been closed since Thursday 24 September, with no end date given. Before 8am, school services use Stands N, Q or G instead; the 23 school bus uses Stand C at school times.
- Stockport Road, Cheadle: the Cheadle Green stop (Stop D) is closed for works until Thursday 8 October. Use the stops either side.
- Carrington Road: the stop opposite Brinnington Road is closed until 24 November.
