The Tame and the Goyt meet under the town centre and leave as the Mersey, and Stockport has been built round that junction and the viaduct above it ever since. The borough spread out from there: Edgeley, Reddish and Brinnington close in, the Heatons and Cheadle towards Manchester, Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme, Gatley and Hazel Grove to the south, Marple, Romiley, Bredbury and Woodley out towards the hills.

One council answers for all of them, and what it decides lands very differently in Marple than it does in Reddish. We read the planning register, the licensing notices and the committee papers, and we publish what they say with a link back to the original. We also keep the pages you look up in a hurry, which is the part most people come here for. What Stockport today looks like, in other words, from the documents rather than from press releases.

Stockport today: the numbers behind the news

If you want Stockport today in five figures, these are the ones the borough is actually arguing about, and every one of them is set out in full on the page it links to.

  • 25,371 homes. The government-ordered Local Plan goes out for public comment this autumn, with 8,965 of those homes on land currently in the Green Belt. Stockport planning news.
  • £314,495. The Stockport borough average on the official UK House Price Index for June 2026, up 3.5% on the year but down 0.6% on May, with Heaton Moor at the top of the ladder and a street near the town centre averaging £1.3m. Stockport house prices.
  • 1h 57m to Euston. Fifty-seven direct trains a day from Stockport station, which is why the season ticket question keeps coming up. Stockport trains to London.
  • The A34 until 2028. The upgrade runs for years yet, alongside the shorter closures at Hazel Grove and Bredbury. Stockport roadworks and travel.
  • 18 days out with checked prices, from the mile of wartime air raid tunnels under the town centre to Bramall Hall and its free park. Things to do in Stockport.

Stockport today: what is in the diary

The other half of “what is Stockport today” is what has not happened yet. These are the dates already fixed, taken from the council’s own calendar and the official release schedules rather than from anyone’s press office.

  • The area committees have been and gone for this cycle. All six sat between Monday 7 and Thursday 10 September: Werneth and Heatons & Reddish on the 7th, Stepping Hill and Cheadle on the 8th, Marple on the 9th, Central Stockport and Bramhall & Cheadle Hulme South on the 10th. Area committees are where ward highway schemes, licensing objections and small grants get settled, so the minutes and decision records from that week are the ones to read if your street is in an argument. Stockport’s committee calendar.
  • Cabinet meets tomorrow, Monday 15 September, at 6pm, with the Cabinet (Housing) Committee the following evening. The same night as Cabinet, the scrutiny review into Opportunities for Rail in Stockport sits at 6pm. Before either, the Standards Committee and an extraordinary meeting of the Housing, Economy & Environment Scrutiny Committee both sit at 6pm on Monday 14 September.
  • Planning and Highways Regulation returns on 24 September, at 6pm, with Licensing, Environment & Safety the night before on the 23rd and committee site visits on the morning of 21 September. Between meetings, applications keep being decided under delegated powers, which is why the planning register matters more than the committee cycle for most streets.
  • The month closes with the accounts and then the whole council. Audit Committee on 30 September at 6pm, the ONE Stockport Health & Care Locality Board the same afternoon at 1.30pm, and the full Council Meeting on 1 October at 6pm.
  • The next house price figures land on 16 September. The June 2026 UK House Price Index, the source of the £314,495 borough average above, was published on 19 August; the July data follows at 9.30am on Wednesday 16 September 2026, and August’s on 21 October. Stockport house prices.
